Try January – How January should be spent.
The team here at locallied have one thing in common. We all love January, and so should you.
We believe that January is a special month. So special that the phrase “Dry January” offends us. That is, of course, unless you are spending Dry January drinking Dry Gin, Dry Martini, Dry Sherry or Dry White Wine. It should not be about dusting off your gym kit and joining the hoards that spend 3 months in the gym and think this is the norm. Why would anyone want to do that to themselves.
We understand that your wallet / purse may have had a bashing at Xmas. And getting paid early in December hasn’t helped things either, a 5 / 6 week wait until next payday can put a strain on things. But surely the only way to get through this period is by having fun and enjoying yourself. There is a reason why over 20 pubs per week are closing down in the UK. It is our fault, we are not supporting our local independents enough.
But fear not, we are hear to help you. Together we can change the way our minds think. We can be rid of this Dry January mentality of all or nothing. We are the responsible drinkers who can still manage a healthy lifestyle whilst having fun. We eat within moderation and know when we need to bust out a few lunges after a feasting on fast food. So here is a little list of things for you to try in Try January.
Spend a Sunday drinking £4 cocktails all day at 400 RABBITS
Sundays are supposed to be a day of rest. But this is a Sunday in Try January, so what better way to spend the afternoon (and evening if your stomach can take it) than drinking Tequila, Mezcal & Cocktails.
400 Rabbits is one of Nottingham’s hidden gems. Situated on Hurts Yard, one of Nottingham’s last remaining ancient thoroughfares connecting Long Row and Parliament Street, it is Nottingham’s first dedicated Mezcaleria and Tequila bar serving up a range of over 100 of Mexico’s finest Tequilas and Mezcals and an awesome range of cocktails, beers and wines. That is 100 new drinks to sample in Try January. Don’t forget to take your locallied membership card with you for £4 cocktails all day. You are welcome.
Become a ping-pong professional at Das Kino
You may have been inspired by the summer olympics, you may have watched Forest Gump for the 38th time, you may love cocktails. It really doesn’t matter how or why you fancy a game of ping pong, all that matters is where you play. And there isn’t a better setting than at Das Kino.
Brimming with vintage furniture, neon lights and industrial innards, Das Kino makes a plight as one of the city’s most trendy places to drink. Not enough yet? Well, there’s more. Not only known for their rusted interiors and cool neon charm, Das Kino promises some of the best evening entertainment in the business as there’s not only Olympic standard ping-pong tables, there’s live music, DJs, dancing and more.
So cancel that gym membership you have just signed up for, get yourself down to Das Kino for a game of table tennis and whilst you are there try a few (when I say few I mean ALL) of their delicious cocktails. Dry January – I laugh in your face, this is Try January after all.

Become a fashionista with change of wardrobe at Wild Clothing
With a new year comes new clothes. And there is no better place to purchase some new threads than at Wild Clothing. Some might say the only independent vintage shop worth visiting in the Midlands. We tend to agree. But scratch past the moth eaten duds and old band t-shirts that may have seen better days and you’ll find that Wild is so much more than a second hand store. There is always a little gem to be found.
Wild Clothing first opened its big red door to the public in April 1983. Located then as it still is at 4-6 Broad Street in Nottingham’s ‘Alternative’ Hockley district, a stones throw from the bustling city centre, Wild takes pride in the fact that over 30 years later, it is now Nottingham’s longest running independent fashion clothing store.
Wild’s reputation was founded on its eclectic mix of top quality handpicked vintage clothing. Back in ’83 this was mainly based on items from the 1940’s to the 1960’s. You will still find clothing from those decades in store today, alongside styles from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and right up to the present day!
A popular haunt for locals of all age groups, and students from the many universities and colleges, Wild is a must visit for anyone looking for that unique one off item, or just something cool and stylish to wear day or night.
So what are you waiting for. Your wardrobe will thank you after a little visit to Wild Clothing.
Drink Whiskey like a cowboy at Last Chance Saloon
So your uncle came over for Christmas and cracked open a bottle of Whiskey, you tried some and realised you quite like it. Or perhaps you have just finished the first season of Westworld and wish it was a real place to visit. You can find the answer to both at Last Chance Saloon.
Last Chance Saloon is a new family run independent Eatery based in the Creative Quarter area of Nottingham City Centre, an underground venue in a grade II listed building with distinctive western décor. Their focus is on Bacon & Bourbon – a heavenly combination, on trend with the American style, but steering away from the smokehouse aspect and giving some love to the Wonder meat that is Bacon.
The Whiskey list is extensive with over 50 Bourbons, 15 Ryes, 17 American Whiskeys and around 30 others from around the world – with promise to expand the selection, Last Chance are well on their way to boasting the largest selection in the Midlands. The cocktail list is innovative, with a range of spirits – not just Whiskey – Wine, champagne beer and softs are also available.
Regular nights include £2 Chilli dogs every Tuesday and £9.99 all you can eat bacon nights every Thursday. But best of all – take your locallied membership card with you and you will get 20% off the bill. Never a better reason than to Try January.
Have a crafty night in with help from Brew Cavern
If none of the above Try January options tickle your fancy, and you are glued to your sofa because January has defeated you, then fear not. We still have a solution to help you get rid of those January blues and that solution is Brew Cavern.
Brew Cavern is a world beer store stocking a range of local, national & international craft beers, bottle conditioned real ales & ciders.
Their mission is to source a selection of hard to find beers from around the globe, showcasing new craft brewers whilst paying homage to beer’s lengthy history by stocking beers from more traditional breweries. They’re also fans of keeping it local and this is reflected in the range of beers from brewers across the East Midlands.
It’s not all about beer though as they have a modest selection of organic cider from Scotland, Wales, England & France.
They love to chat about beer & cider and are always open to feedback, so if you can’t see what you’re looking for and have a request, let them know and they will do their best to get it in.
Likewise if you’re looking for something new and don’t know where to start ask them for a recommendation and they will help you choose something to excite your tastebuds!
